What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that causes severe damage to the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body. The nerve begins at the base of the spine and continues all the way through the leg, ending at the bottom of the heel. When the sciatic nerve sustains damage, it causes pain that can occur anywhere from the lower back to the leg to the foot. Our chiropractic care can help.

Why Does Sciatica Develop?

Sciatica develops for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common reasons are vertebral disc compression and traumatic injury such as a car accident. Sciatica can also develop when a person gains a considerable amount of weight and is sometimes seen in pregnant women.

How Can Chiropractors Help With Sciatica?

Chiropractic care offers a non-invasive all natural treatment for sciatica pain. After doing a comprehensive physical exam, your chiropractor will discuss the origins of the pain. The chiropractor will also ask you some questions about how, where and when the pain occurs. A gentle hands-on chiropractic spinal adjustment is usually the most effective way to manage sciatica pain. During this adjustment, the sciatic nerve can be gently guided into its proper place. Often, the sciatic nerve is pinched or painfully trapped between vertebrae, so by setting it free this adjustment can sometimes provide relief very quickly. Sometimes, chiropractic adjustments may be complemented by other natural healing methods like massage, cold therapy, heat therapy, and electrical muscle stimulation. In the more painful sciatica cases, the chiropractor may recommend a non-surgical spinal decompression.

What Can You Do At Home For Sciatica Relief?

Your chiropractor can recommend some exercises that can provide additional pain relief. These strengthening exercises will aid in the development of a stronger support system for the spine, and consequently for the sciatic nerve. Regular exercise and an overall healthy lifestyle are excellent ways to stay healthy and keep sciatica at bay in the future.
